Minitutorial: transmitters/receivers

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

With the rapid trend toward use of LED-based transmitters and PIN-based receivers to relatively high-speed/long-distance point-to-point links for local networks, there is a need to characterize accurately channel bandwidth, jitter, and distortion for a broad range of applications. This tutorial describes overall link performance, specification, and standardization issues with respect to individual transmit/receive component parameters and applies these concepts to an FDDI design example.
