Abstract

Lightwave technology is advancing toward opto-clcctronic integration and optical processing. Future lightwave networks may therefore involve optical logic for processing, regeneration, and switching of signals that are transported via optical fibers. We have demonstrated the first all-optical regenerator which performs timing recovery and threshold decision functions in the optical domain. Our regenerator consists of only 3 active elements: two sclf-electro-optic-effcct devices (SEEDs) [1] and a cw laser to provide the optical power. An optical gain of 2 dB was attained in this first simple demonstration; the wavelength of operation was 0.85 μm and the bit rate was 5 kb/s.
