Abstract

The recent development, and easy availability of inexpensive, high-power, single frequency AlGaAs lasers designed for use in the compact disc industry, suggests the possibility of constructing high performance, densely packed wavelength division multiplexed systems using these devices [1]. Direct frequency modulation through injection current is probably the most favored modulation format for such systems owing to the simplicity of the technique, and the resulting compact optical spectrum.
