Abstract

High-speed lightwave transmission systems are now operational in many countries, mainly at line rates up to 565 Mbit/s and 1.2 Gbit/s. Further increases in installed capacity have been demonstrated with bidirectional transmission and wavelength division multiplexing.1 Most current systems feature 1.3-μm Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser sources and step-index monomode fiber.
