Abstract
As the number of operational optical fiber transmission systems increases, so does the need to Increase the transmission capacity of the systems already installed. A method gaining wide acceptance uses optical couplers enabling bidirectional transmission on a single fiber1 but carries a 6-dB loss penalty. This may be eliminated by operating at different wavelengths (1.3 and 1.55 µm) bidirectionally or unidirectionally.2
