Abstract

A single-longitudinal-mode semiconductor laser generating ultrashort optical pulses is attractive for use in future ultra-high-bit-rate optical fiber transmission systems. We have examined the effect of detuning on the side mode suppression in a distributed feedback (DFB) laser in ultrashort optical pulse generating conditions. We utilized the gain-switched technique1 and achieved 20-ps short pulses maintaining single-longitudinal-mode operation in lasers having detuning to the shorter wavelength side of the gain peak.
