Fundamental limits on measurement accuracy in optical time domain reflectometer systems

Abstract

It has often been stated that an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) based on heterodyne detection may reach the quantum noise limit for a sufficiently strong local oscillator power. This is, however, only true for backscatter signal power levels Ps in a short intermediate range.
