Abstract

The structural parameters of single-mode fiber such as core concentricity error (CCE), fiber diameter, and noncircularity of fiber greatly affect the splice loss; they are important parameters indicating the quality of the fiber. Structural parameters have been measured by RNFP, NFP, or the image shearing method; with these methods, measurement accuracy depends on the condition of the fiber endface. Here we present a newly developed method, which we call the side-viewing method. In this, the test fiber is observed from the side, so it is not necessary to cut it; therefore, we can measure the structural parameters easily and accurately.
