Development of high Nd3+ content VAD single-mode fiber by the molecular stuffing technique

Abstract

Rare-earth ion-doped optical fibers1 are drawing wide attention as the functional fibers applicable to fiber lasers, fiber amplifiers, and fiber-optic sensors. A technique to uniformly dope a high content of rare-earth ions was considered, and a high Nd3+ content low-loss single-mode fiber was developed by using the vapor phase axial deposition (VAD) method and the molecular stuffing technique.2 in which a VAD soot preform is impregnated with an alcohol solution of high-rare-earth ion content.
