Abstract

It is well known1 that an additional absorption band at 630 nm appears in fibers having an undoped silica core of low water-containing synthetic fused silica produced with a plasma torch (e.g., Suprasil W2). With decreasing fiber diameter this absorption band increases drastically. Typical values are in the range of 200 dB/km at a core diameter of 100 pm.
