New method for the analysis of self-phase modulation in single-mode fibers

Abstract

It Is well known that the nonlinear refractive index (Kerr effect) of a fiber can compensate for Its linear dispersion1 (in intensity modulated systems) via the process of self-phase modulation (SPM). Recently, phase-to-amplitude conversion in fibers has been observed2 so that detrimental effects of SPM in FSK and PSK systems become of interest. In ASK systems the narrowed pulses may also have long tails that cause intersymbol interference.
