Abstract

An electro-absorption (EA) modulator1,2 having high-speed and low-chirp characteristics is expected to realize a simple and reliable transmission for multi-gigabit long-haul transmission systems. Here we have developed a highpower monolithic EA modulator/DFB laser light source, and the monolithic device has been used for the first time in the 5 Gb/s long-haul transmission experiment yielding no error floor and a very small penalty for large dispersion.
