Abstract

Solitons have recently been proposed as the appropriate optical pulses for ultrafast processing REFD6, REFDB. The principle is that, in the sollten regime, the Kerr nonlinearity imparts a common nonlinear phase to an entire pulse. This will mean that intensity dependent effects in a phase sensitive device result in operations on the complete pulse giving good switching characteristics for non-square pulses. Here we describe the first experimental observations of this effect.
