Abstract

Pumping erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) in the 4I15/2 to 4I13/2 absorption band is attractive because excited state absorption is absent and the development of laser diode pumps can take advantage of the already advanced technology for InGaAsP 1.5-μm laser diodes.1 Recently, high gains have been achieved2-4 using laser diodes with emission spectra centered between 1.47 and 1.49 μm.
