Abstract

Erbium doped fiber amplifiers have produced up to a 34-dB optical gain at 1536 nm.1 Further increases in gain are accompanied by an increase in amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), which saturates the amplifier. This paper describes a gated erbium-fiber ring amplifier which avoids the problem of ASE buildup and unwanted feedback.
