Abstract
The use of the Kerr non-linearity in optical fibres to extend the transmission capability of optical communication systems [1,2] is currently of great interest Recent experiments [3,4] have concentrated on the time domain and demonstrated transmission over short lengths of fibre. In this paper we report for the first time transmission of a continuous 19.2 Gbit/s pulse train with a semiconductor source and 100 km of fibre. This system was dispersion limited in the absence of non-linearity. We present measurements of the pulses before, during and after transmission in both time and frequency domain. This information, which is necessary for theoretical analysis of this type of system, has not been presented so completely elsewhere.
