Abstract
Recent experiments have demonstrated that erbium doped optical fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are useful for long distance optical communication systems.1,2 The advantages of an EDFA are its high gain and low insertion loss, which make possible net gains of more than 20 dB. It has recently been recognized, however, that the system performance with such high gain amplifiers may be degraded by reflections from optical components incorporated in the system.3 This would mean that the optical preamplifier system's performance might be greatly circumvented by reflections.
