Abstract
Semiconductor laser amplifiers have now proved their ability to improve the performance of single-mode fiber communication systems, at least in the laboratory stage. After a brief background review of optical amplification in communication systems, the principle of operation and main device characteristics of semiconductor optical amplifiers are examined. Some recent examples of use in fiber communication systems are also reviewed.
