Abstract

Development of single-mode waveguide devices allows processing functions within optical communications networks to remain in the optical domain. D-shaped optical fiber can be used to overcome the difficulties of interfacing between dissimilar guiding media, and a range of devices based on this technology is currently being investigated (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2). We report initial results from narrowband grating reflection filters which utilize the long interaction lengths available from the D-fiber.
