Polarization dependence of semiconductor laser amplifier noise figure

Abstract

The noise characteristics of optical amplifiers are important for the design of optical transmission systems. A useful measure is the amplifier noise figure conventionally expressed as 2nsp·χ.1 In terms of directly measurable amplifier parameters, this is proportional to ρsp/Gff, where Gff is the amplifier fiber-to-fiber gain and ρsp is the spontaneous noise power spectral density in the output fiber at the same polarization and wavelength as the demodulated signal light.
