Analysis of multiple-channel optical bus networks using doped fiber amplifiers

Abstract

The number of stations that can be supported in a passive bus network without amplifiers is only a few tens, even if the tap coefficients are optimized.1 In an earlier paper,2 we showed that using optical amplifiers in a single-channel bus increases the number of stations that can be supported by two orders of magnitude to a few hundreds. Here we determine the number of stations that can be supported in a multiple-channel wavelength-division-multiplexed bus using amplifiers when all stations on the bus transmit simultaneously.
