Abstract
The long-term reliability of silica-based optical fibers has increased with the advent of the hermetic carbon coating.1,2 Deposited on the silica surface, the carbon film has been demonstrated to reduce the fiber's fatigue rate. In addition, this film has been shown to improve the transmission reliability by reducing the diffusion rate of hydrogen to the light-guiding region.3
