Abstract
Optical technology moves inexorably forward, doubling the capacity of fibers every year. We seldom pause to consider the economic and social consequences of this revolution. Will communications be free? Will images replace characters? And how will any of these technological changes affect the way we live and work? The possibilities are fascinating, endless, and argumentative.
