Abstract

With the advancement of the optical coherent1 and amplification technologies, a practical use of a large-scale star coupler has become more feasible. Under these circumstances, fabrications of 8 × 8 star couplers were reported2,3 recently. However, the monolithic fabrication of a star coupler larger than 8 × 8 is difficult because the available device chip size may impose a limitation on a degree of integration.
