Abstract

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) have the potential for use as repeaters in terrestrial long-haul lightwave networks. The main advantages for using amplifiers instead of regenerators are that (1) fiber amplifiers are laser modulation format and bit-rate transparent and provide the opportunity for capacity upgrade through higher bit-rate or wavelength-division multiplexing techniques and (2) optical amplifiers have fewer active components and are therefore potentially more reliable and less costly than regenerators.
