Abstract
Coherent optical transmission has long been recognized to offer capabilities for long-reach and high-density wavelength-division multiplex (WDM) operation, given technology appropriate to the operational environment. Much effort has been needed to provide coherent optical sources with good modulation characteristics and to guarantee fade-free detection in spite of fluctuations in the received state of polarization. The first role of field demonstrations has been to show that these problems can be solved.
