Abstract

In a recent Electronics Letter [1], we have described a novel technique for the convenient measurement of bit error rates in a recirculating loop, and our corresponding observations of "error-free" (measured BER ≤ 10−10) transmission at 2.5 Gbit/s over more than 14,000 km. (Subsequently we have extended the error-free distance (EFD) at 2.5 Gbit/s to 17,000 km). Here we report extension of those BER results, using basically the same technique, to 5 Gbit/s, single channel, and to 10 Gbit/s in a two-channel WDM.
