Broad-band Dispersion Compensation Using the Higher-order Spatial-mode in a Two-mode Fiber

Abstract

The emergence of Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers has eliminated fiber loss as a fundamental limitation in lightwave system design. As a result there is increased interest in finding ways to alleviate the limitations imposed by chromatic dispersion in single-mode fiber spans operated in the wavelength region around 1550 nm [1]. The use of dispersion-shifted fiber with zero-dispersion wavelength around 1550 nm is one obvious solution. However this is not always cost effective, particularly for conventional fiber networks that are already installed.
