Impact of fiber optics on local exchange networks

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The introduction of fiber optics technology in local exchange networks is changing the balance of transmission and switching costs, network performance, survivability, operations strategy, and service delivery. This talk surveys those impacts and gives a view of the resulting evolving directions of network design and implementation over the next decade.
