Abstract

There has been increasing interest in a new generation of field mountable single-mode fiber connectors in which a short piece of optical fiber is inserted and epoxied in a straight-tip ferrule. One ferrule end is polished in the factory, while the other is terminated into a mechanical splice1 that is integrated to the connector body. This fiber stub is linked to the fiber in the field through the mechanical splice. The most crucial part of these connector assemblies is completed in controlled factory conditions eliminating the need of epoxies and polishing in the field.
