Abstract
Repeaterless transoceanic optical communication links in which the loss is compensated by amplification via erbium fiber amplifiers are the subject of very active research and development. It is likely that future designs of transoceanic links will choose soliton propagation, in particular since WDM with solitons is a possibility, should it prove possible to overcome the Gordon-Haus limit1 that is imposed by spontaneous emission noise.
