Abstract

Er-doped fiber amplifiers are of great interest in the field of optical fiber communications because they operate in a loss minimum region (1.55-µm band) of silica fibers.1 Typical fabrication methods for rare earth-doped silica glasses are chemical vapor deposition and the molecule stuffing method.2 Currently, a solgel method has become technologically important because of potential advantages for high concentration and homogeneous doping. This paper describes the fluorescence characteristics of Er-doped silica glass prepared by the solgel method and the amplification characteristics of optical fiber prepared by solgel dipcoating.3
