Abstract

Multifunction operations of semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs) may find interesting uses in optical computing and communication systems. SLA receivers amplifying and detecting optical signals simultaneously have been demonstrated.1,2 This paper reports using an SLA as a three-function device, i.e., amplifier, detector, and transmitter, in a 622-Mbit/s digital system.
