Optical techniques for header recognition in asynchronous transfer-mode networks

Abstract

The ever increasing demand upon bandwidth capability in local and metropolitan areas has pushed the basic technology further toward the eventual dominant use of single-mode fibers as the transmission medium. The provision of services like video telephone and videofax therefore requires a strategy that allows optical technology to be installed economically for telephone while maintaining the potential for evolution. The support of services with a potentially large range of attributes leads to switching based on the routing information held in labels as in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM).
