Abstract
The use of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) combined with a coherent detection technique is very effective in enhancing the performance of an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR).1 A coherent OTDR (C-OTDR) with a 36-dB single-way dynamic range (SWDR) using EDFAs as postamplifiers has been demonstrated.2 This paper reports further performance enhancement by using EDFAs both as postamplifiers and in-line amplifiers. It also presents an optical frequency control technique that effectively reduces the amplitude fluctuation caused by fading noise, which is a problem of a C-OTDR.
