Frequency-locking of a semiconductor laser using an optical phase modulator and PSK modulation

Abstract

Frequency-locking of semiconductor lasers to atomic or molecular resonances using an external phase modulator1,2 eliminates the need to dither the laser frequency. Inspired by FM spectroscopy,3 this scheme usually involves sinusoidal phase modulation. We present here experimental results showing the possibility to lock the laser by using directly a random binary signal4 to drive the modulator. This opens the possibility to use the information signal as the interrogation signal for locking purposes.
