High-power single-mode InGaAs lasers for pumping praseodymium-doped fiber amplifiers

Erbium-doped amplifiers for use in 1.55-μm fiber-optic communications systems has been the subject of extensive research in recent years. Applications of these amplifiers require development of pump laser sources either at 0.98 or 1.48 μm as well as signal lasers at 1.55 μm. Fiber amplifiers which operate at 1.3 μm have the advantage of being compatible with existing 1.3-μm signal sources and cabling. Recently, it was demonstrated that Pr+3-doped fluoride amplifiers are capable of high gain at 1.3 μm.1 These fibers have an absorption that is peaked at 1.017 μm.1,2
