Abstract

Optical amplifiers are very attractive, especially for submarine systems, because of their high gain levels over a wide transmission band and because of their transparency and simplicity. However, the limitations of ultralong optical-amplifier spans have been discovered through simulations, circulating-loop experiments, and straight-line transmission experiments.
