Measurement of back-reflection at optical connectors using optical coherence-domain reflectometry with synthesis of the coherence function and asymmetrical nonlinearity compensation

Abstract

In optical systems for communication or sensing, optical components, such as laser-diode modules, optical couplers, fibers, and Fiber amplifiers, are connected by optical connectors. However, unwanted reflections to the light source induce intensity noise and mode instability, even though the amount of the reflection is approximately 40 dB lower than the launched light power. Reflectometry with millimeter or submillimeter spatial resolution is required for diagnosing the characteristics of each component or the total system along the optical path.
