Abstract
Erbium-doped-fiber amplifiers (EDFA’s) have reduced the importance of loss in lightwave system design; however, EDFA’s are limited in that they operate only in the 1550-nm window. The best solution for new installations is the use of dispersion-shifted fiber. There is a large installed base of fiber optimized for 1310nm operation; however, this fiber becomes dispersion limited at 1550 nm if used in long lengths or at high bit rates. To fully utilize EDFA’s in installed systems, a technique for compensating for the chromatic dispersion of the transmission fiber is required.
