Abstract

Requirements for transmission capacity are increasing rapidly because of recent advances in data communication and video distribution. The design for high-capacity systems, such as a 10-Gbit/s optical transmission system, becomes an important issue.1 Figure 1 shows important components in the design of a high-speed optical fiber transmission system. This paper considers these components and discusses the system design procedures in two different phases: one phase is a device and circuit design for realizing high-speed operation, and the other is a system design that considers the transmission characteristics of high-speed signals.
