Abstract
Optical preamplifier receivers that use Er-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are effective in achieving high receiver sensitivity, particularly for multigigabit/s lightwave systems.1-3 In this paper we report the use of a rack-mounted, 980-nm laser-diode-pumped EDFA preamplifier receiver module for multigigabit/s transmission systems. Stable long-term bit-error-rate (BER) performance and a record usable receiver sensitivity (P=-40.5 dBm) were obtained at 5 Gbit/s. We also discuss experimental and theoretical results of the receiver sensitivity dependence on preamplifier gain and optical- and electrical-filter bandwidths.
