Abstract

Extensive research has been performed on Er3+-doped optical fiber amplifiers (EDFA’s), which are considered useful equipment for optical communication systems. Here we report experimental studies of an EDFA that can be used as a bidirectional amplifier by making use of a frequency-domain-multiplexing technique. Characteristics of optical gain and bit error rate for the 2.4-Gbit/s signal are shown.
