Abstract

A recent great achievement in optical devices is the development of optical-fiber amplifiers. In fact, since the demonstration of an erbium-doped-fiber amplifier (EDFA) in 1987, EDFA’s have has been giving a powerful impetus to various optical transmission systems. Compared with progress in EDFA’s for 1.5 µm, however, progress in fiber amplifiers for 1.3 µm, where most terrestrial fiber transmission systems operate, is a bit behind, unfortunately.
