Abstract

Optical frequency switching for cross-connect and packet-switch- - ing applications is being investigated in order to significantly increase the transport and processing capabilities of optical networks.1-4 From the viewpoint of the cross-connect system design it is important to perform frequency switching without dropping any bits. The combined action of fast tunable lasers and fixed-tuned channel-selection filters has the possibility of realizing an optical frequency-division-multiplexing (FDM) crossconnect that can achieve the needed switching performance.
