Abstract

In long-haul communications, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) operate at a particular wavelength to produce the optimal level of dispersion. The gain spectrum of the ions can be used to filter the accumulated amplified spontaneous emission in such a system.1 To optimally use this autofiltering, the gain-peak wavelength (GPW) of the chain must correspond to the optimal dispersion wavelength. We present a rule for making these wavelengths coincide.
