Abstract

In erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) polarized orthogonally to a saturating signal experiences more gain than does ASE with the same polarization as the saturating signal.1 The accumulated enhancement of orthogonal ASE may degrade the performance of long systems.1 This effect has been observed in single EDFAs by using differential measurement techniques.2 In an EDFA with 6 dB of gain compression, the magnitude of the gain difference is approximately 120 mdB.2
