Abstract

Since the first demonstration of photo-induced Bragg grating formation in GeO2-doped silica optical fiber [1], photosensitivity in silica-based glass has been attracting considerable attention, because of its application to optical devices including single-longitudinal-mode Er3+- doped fiber lasers [2]. Among silica-based systems, P2O5-doped silica is a particularly important material for fabricating low loss passive waveguides [3] or active waveguides codoped with Er3+ [4]. The formation of intra-core Bragg gratings in Er3+-P2O5-codoped silica waveguides on silicon will permit the integration of wavelength-controlled optical sources with passive waveguide devices. However, to our knowledge, photosensitivity in P2O5-doped silica that does not contain a germanium dopant has not been reported previously.
