Abstract

The next generation of long-haul undersea transmission systems will use erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and will require new techniques for system monitoring. We describe experimental results showing the feasibility of passive high-loss loopbacks and digital correlation for in-service monitoring and out-of-service fault location.
