Recently, 10-Gbit/s transmission experiments have been performed intensively.1 Wavelength-division multiplexing2,3 (WDM) is one technique for realizing larger-capacity long-haul transmission systems, such as 40-Gbit/s systems. However, WDM systems also have many problems to be overcome, such as four- wave mixing (FWM) cross talk, and the nonflat gain spectra of Er-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs).
